Abstract

This paper reviews the twenty-fifth volume of the Annuaire de l'Afrique du Nord (published in 1988), which is devoted to the theme of housing under the title "Housing, State and Society in the Maghreb." The author, Mohamed Mouaqit, summarizes studies covering Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco, organized around four sub-themes: housing policies, urban housing and land rights, production and practices of inhabited space, and housing in rural social transformations. The review highlights that all contributors agree on the lack of effectiveness of state action, poor prioritization, and the failure to connect housing policy to broader development strategies. The volume underscores the quantitative and qualitative housing challenges facing Maghreb countries.
