Abstract
This article revisits the unusual story of Estebanico, or Mustafa Azemmouri, a young Moroccan fisherman from Azemmour who was enslaved by the Portuguese and sold to a Spanish nobleman. It follows his transformation from Mustafa to Estebanico and his participation in the exploration of the New World. The study emphasizes the skills that allowed him to take a leading role during the expedition and frames his journey through the themes of exploration, conquest, slavery, and freedom.
