Abstract

This article examines the status and place of Estevan de Dorantes in sixteenth-century Spanish accounts of New Spain. It revisits Spanish narratives and medieval Moroccan historical documents in order to understand Estevan's position, the circumstances that led him to join the Spaniards' expedition to the Americas, and the reasons for his marginalization in historiography. The study highlights his role as one of the four survivors of the Narváez expedition and as the first Moroccan and African to enter the American Southwest.
