Abstract
This article examines how Cabeza de Vaca’s report shaped a colonial narrative that minimized Estevanico’s role in his own survival and that of the three other survivors of the Narváez expedition. Although Estevanico was long marginalized in colonial accounts, later scholarship and literary works have restored attention to his distinctive role as an explorer. The article analyzes Abdelaziz Ait Saleh’s novel The Afro-American as a work that refutes colonial narratives, focusing especially on Cabeza de Vaca’s account and later reports by Marcos de Niza and Coronado. It shows how the novel exposes bias, falsehoods, and prejudice against Estevanico, also known as Mustapha Al-Azmouri.
