Ecocriticism and literature

Abstract

This paper sheds lights on some of the conditions in which ecocriticism emerged. As a post-modern literary theory, ecocriticism was a reaction to literary critical theories which were concerned with the textual analysis, ignoring nature as a paramount component in the construction of literary texts. For these theories, nature was no more than a secondary aspect or even a decorative scene deemed either to reflect the characters’ moods or to be just a setting in which the events take place. Ecocriticism, on the contrary, considers nature and human life as essentially interdependent. Each influences the other. It is this mutual relationship that ecocriticism calls for attention with the view of raising an ecological consciousness.
