Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake : An Ecocritical Reading

Abstract

Reading the dystopian world in Oryx and Crake through an ecocritical lens highlights important matters to humanity and the environment. The world created in this novel is a speculative imagination of humans undergoing a disastrous genocide at the expense of an unfortunate misuse of science. With evidence from the text, it is suggested that Atwood’s Oryx and Crake foretells possible environmental and humane crises emerging not only from the depraved use of science but also from the unfortunate gap between knowledge fields. That is, humanity in Oryx and Crake could have been altered as a result of dismissing the humanities and arts. The speculated vision in the text is a call for bridging gaps and collaborating efforts to save the planet.
