Abstract
The article traces the classical characteristics of historical narrative, informing the biography, autobiography and historical writing in terms of recording external facts. Biography is the writing of the life experience of another person, while autobiography is writing one’s own experience. The article delineates the context of the historical narrative in Arabic literature, from the writing of the prophet’s biography, to its maturity. This marks the beginning of the history of the autobiography in Arabic literature history. Autobiography is writing the Self, and not as the Orientalist would claim.
