Abstract

In this article, Antoine Eche will elucidate the motives that lead the writer- traveler to concealing his identity during the journey to a foreign country, and also after the publication of his travel narrative. He will therefore analyze the case of Pierre-Jean Grosley's account: Observation sur l'Italie et les italiens, by two Swedish gentlemen, translated from Swedish into French and published in 1764, by exploring in particular the relationship between the reader and the narrative text, which is established by the use of a pseudonym or an anonymous name. Thus, he will examine the question of manipulation and connivance, which are essential components of writing, and where the mask is part of the reader's horizon of expectations. The scholar will then reveal the image of the Swedish mask in the press writings, and will explore how his other works were received before presenting the positive and negative aspects of using the mask, as well as the writer’s view of his creations. Finally, the scholar will question the feasibility of all form of disguise, especially in this case study, which does not endanger its author, unlike those writers and philosophers of his generation who try to avoid censorship and prevention.
