Abstract

Human passions have often been the matrix of several literary, paraliterary or even philosophical productions. The network of active and reactive forces that life constitutes influences and feeds the literary writing according to various themes: nostalgia, hope, joy, remorse, etc. The narrative seems to be the driving force behind events, both imaginary and real; it is also a driving force of passions inasmuch as it articulates the passions experienced and the ordeals endured. However, this all-encompassing proliferation of passionate impulses in the narrative requires a dialogical dynamic. A dynamic that reveals intertextual echoes between the author’s life on the one hand, and the cultural and literary heritage on the other one. As a result, this mode of functioning concomitant with the intertextual dynamics. The narrative in this process sets literary memory in motion and summons previous texts to serve as creative matrices. The texts then enter into a dialogue with memory and literary culture and draw on what we might call literary reminiscence. This study focuses on Amélie Nothomb’s travel narrative Biographie de la Faim, in which we will show how intertextual echoes function as creative dynamics and highlight the passions that are crafted in this intertextual continuum. The first issue to be addressed to define the notion of intertextuality. Afterwards, we will show the role of intertextual dynamics in the actualization of passions in the work under study.
