Abstract
This article attempts to highlight Ibn Fadlan’s founding role in the establishment of the Rihlagenre, through making a transition from pure scientific reporting to literary description that sees the facts of the journey from the perspective of the narrator/hero, as found in the modern novel. The hero faces real risky adventures. The narrator uses the process of manipulating the temporalities of history and discourse, and the processes of moving through space, as used by novelists. The pleasure of the text is aroused by the textures of expectation and anticipation, and also by the astonishment caused by the strange and wonderful facts and by the evocation of foreign mores and characters.
