Abstract

The present research was based on an authentic corpus, collected from questionnaires distributed to 15 health professionals at the Hassan II University Hospital in Fez, Morocco, who were asked to give the Moroccan Arabic equivalent of several French medical terms. The aim of the study, based on the "cognitive approach", was to analyse the nature and function of metaphor as a cognitive and communicative tool in the scientific field, particularly in the medical expressions used between health professionals and patients. The aim will be to classify this figure according to his type, his role in the daily communication of users of the Fez hospital and his use (collective or individual). It will also be necessary to determine, by looking for significant features, its causes (shifts in meaning, analogies and ambiguity of basic concepts) and its effects (attenuation, understanding and communication) on the addressee (healthcare staff or patients).
