Abstract

The main objective of this article is to analyze how Le Sopha by Crébillon fils, through its complex narrative structure and mise en abyme, subverts the conventions of the 18th-century philosophical and libertine tale. By examining the role of the narrator, transformed into a sofa, and the use of the Oriental frame, this article seeks to understand how Crébillon fils invites the reader to critically reflect on morality, desire, and social conventions, while manipulating the audience’s expectations. We will also explore how the work employs irony, metanarratives, and ambiguous characters to engage the reader in an active reflection that goes beyond mere amorous intrigues.
