Abstract
This article proposes a definition of the African short story as a distinct literary genre, differentiating it from the African folk tale and the novel. Drawing on Fredric Jameson's concept of national allegory and examples from Ousmane Sembene, Myriam Warner-Vieyra, and J.-P. Tati Loutard, it argues that the genre's specificity lies in its allegorical structure linking individual experience to collective postcolonial history.
