Abstract
: Julio Cervera Baviera is a scientist, a politician and an adventurer. He is passionate about Africa. He was sent to Morocco in 1884 on a four-month expedition mission with the aim of a subsequent military occupation. This Spanish traveler described most of the details of the expedition in Expedición geográfico- militar al interior y costas de Marruecos, he himself wrote and published in Barcelona in 1885. This book provides a geographical description of the regions he visited, as well as the traditions of their people. Julio Cervera Baviera’s expedition left from Ceuta and arrived in Fez, Morocco, armed with his intelligence and the loyalty of the ‘Moors’ who helped him avoid the attack of bandits and suspicion of the men in power. From the very beginning of the trip, he disguised himself as a Moroccan, adopted the name of Omar Sharif and presented himself as a visitor from Tunisia in order to carry out his mission to the fullest. This study will shed light on Baviera’s controversial personality through studying its presence in Morocco and all what he witnessed while carrying out his mission.
